Dr. Guy A. Catone was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He attended college at the University Of Pittsburgh and following graduation he attended the University Of Pittsburgh School Of Dental Medicine. After earning his DMD degree, Dr. Catone entered the Graduate School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. After completing training for advanced degree status he served his residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan. Following his residency he secured a U S Public Health Fellowship in experimental pathology which he served at the Birmingham Medical Center in Birmingham, Alabama. After 6 years of training post dental school Dr. Catone worked as an Assistant Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine. He then was selected by the Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to head the Department of Dentistry and Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery which he served for 26 years. He was responsible for the training of 50 oral and maxillofacial surgery and general practice residents in all aspects of the surgical specialty. Allegheny General Hospital is a Level I Trauma Center and Dr. Catone and his team cared for maxillofacial trauma victims in the Shock Trauma Unit there. The oral and maxillofacial program at Allegheny General Hospital was nationally recognized and significant referrals were made to the program from other states.

After his experience at Allegheny General Hospital he entered full time private practice in Monroeville, and Oakland Pennsylvania. He still maintains an Associate Professorship at Drexel College of Medicine at the West Penn Allegheny Health System. He is a member of several hospital staffs including UPMC Shadyside Hospital, Forbes Regional Health Center and Allegheny General Hospital, all in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Dr. Catone is a Diplomat of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery being certified in 1972. Later Dr. Catone became an examiner as member of the Advisory Committee of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, the group that examines oral and maxillofacial surgeon candidates for certification or Board status. Dr. Catone has authored 29 scientific articles in referred journals and has written 7 book chapters on maxillofacial trauma, laser surgery, salivary gland pathology and other topics related to his specialty. He has promulgated a novel region for bone harvesting from the proximal tibial for oral and maxillofacial reconstructive procedures in the article “Tibial Autogenous Cancellous Bone as an Alternative Donor Site in Maxillofacial Surgery. (J. Oral and Maxillofac. Surg. 50:1258-1263, 1992. He is publishing an article on harvesting corticocancellous bone from the posterior iliac crest with an acetabular reamer (In press.). These articles offer different anatomical sites where bone can be obtained for grafting in the maxillofacial region.

Dr. Catone has authored a textbook on Laser Applications in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery with Dr. Charles Alling. He has sponsored numerous continuing education programs for dentists and oral and maxillofacial surgeons and has presented multiple speaking engagements nationally and internationally on scientific topics related to his specialty. His surgical interests include the vast scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery including reconstructive surgery, dental implantology, cosmetic maxillofacial surgery, orthognathic surgery, preprosthetic surgery, bone grafting, laser surgery, maxillofacial trauma, surgery for oral tumors, salivary gland pathology and microsurgery. Dr. Catone has kept abreast of new technologies and procedures in his specialty and continues to contribute to the scientific literature.

Dr. Catone is a member of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the American Dental Association, the International Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, the American Trauma Society, the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery and Fellow of the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery among other examples. His hobbies include art, sculpting, gardening and writing.
